The Kanye West (and co.) sing-along may have been James Corden’s highest flying interview yet.

James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segment is typically a light, breezy drive—part conversation and part sing-along, all in a four-wheeled vehicle. Monday night’s edition, which featured Kanye West and the Sunday Service Choir he’s taking on tour as he rolls out his new album, JESUS IS KING, was different for a couple of reasons.First, there was the setting. To accommodate the large choir—and also perhaps to get a bit closer to God (because, don’t forget, Jesus is King)—the car was traded in for a commercial airplane. Hence, Airpool Karaoke.

And second, there was the interview. Though no muckraker, Corden asked extremely thoughtful questions, and wound up with a conversation much richer than the typical late night fare. It helps, of course, that Kanye has been in the mood to talk (truly surprising for Kanye West). But even still, for a television interview conducted in such a manufactured setting, it managed to be rather intimate and revealing.

West discussed his renewed faith, his marriage and family life, and reflected a bit on his beginnings. He told the story of rediscovering God during his hospitalization in 2017. He said he has “no regrets” and “no shame” about his actions these past few years. He hinted at a plan to have three more children (he already has four), and even cracked a funny Kris Humphries joke. And he traced the moment he knew his life would change to when he wrote the “Slow Jamz” line, “She got a light skinned friend look like Michael Jackson / Got a dark skinned friend look like Michael Jackson.”

There was singing too, though in those moments West and Corden receded into the coach section. Choir leader Jason White led the plane through old West songs (“Jesus Walks) and non-West songs (including Ginuwine’s “So Anxious”).

But most intriguing was West’s discussion of religion. Though West claims to read the Bible every night, and is clearly engaged with Christianity, his approach to religion is, like all other things Kanye West, ultimately focused on… Kanye West. He attributed his personal financial bounce back to an act of God. “As humbly as I can put it, He’s using me to show off,” he said. It would be tough to attribute all the hot air to the elevation
