TEXTRHEMA FOR LIVING OFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE APOSTLE JOHNSON SULEMAN MONDAY, OCTOBER 21TH, 2019: “And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. Genesis 12: 10.

The first shot Abram had towards error was his decision to move to Egypt. The scripture uses an unusual word ” down” to describe covenant children whenever they journeyed to Egypt to sojourn there” (Genesis 12:19). Anytime a child of God moves out of the path of God’s counsel, he or she is moving down. The desire of God is to lift His children up and not down. ” He raiseth up the out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill” Psalms 113:7.
Abram and his wife went down to sojourn in Egypt for ten years and as they were leaving Egypt, Sarai decided that Hagar, an Egyptian young lady would be a good companion. It was bad enough that they moved out of God’s plan and went down to Egypt, that an Egyptian stuck with them is what defied logic. You could see a similar emotional pattern in Abram when God instructed him to leave his father’s house. Scripture records that he took Lot his cousin along. Abram must have reasoned, ” If I don’t take him along, no one would care for him”.
When Sarai was leaving Egypt, she became too emotionally attached to Hagar, thinking she had been with her for ten long years; thereby, making it too painful to separate from her. It is not for nothing that the scripture emphasizes where Hagar came from every time her name was mentioned (Genesis 16:3). Regardless of how long Hagar had lived with Abram and Sarai, her citizenship was unaltered; she remained an Egyptian to the bone. Do not be deceived by the gentility or friendliness of an “Egyptian” it is a facade to deal terribly with you at an opportune time.

PRAYER:
Father, as I pray now, help me to remain in the right location and guard against the wrong company in life.
